Patung Anak Lembu Emas: Penyembahan Berhala dalam Perjanjian Lama dan Relevansinya terhadap Fenomena Berhala Modern

Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between the worship of the golden calf in Exodus 32 and the manifestation of idolatry in modern society. In contrast to previous research that generally focused on the prohibition of idolatry or the evaluation of biblical figures, this study offers a comparative analysis of the transformation of the forms and mechanisms of idolatry from the context of ancient Israel to the contemporary era. The study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach to the biblical text, Old Testament theological sources, and studies of modern idolatry. The results show that the golden calf does not merely represent the worship of a physical object, but rather reflects human efforts to control and visualize the divine presence according to their existential needs. The same pattern is found in modern idolatry through the materialism of technology, power, social status, and narcissism that serve as the main objects of human reliance. These findings indicate a shift in the form of idols from physical religious artifacts to functional social and psychological constructs, while the basic mechanism remains the same: the transfer of dependence from God to creation. This research contributes to the development of biblical theology by broadening the understanding of the concept of idolatry as a religious phenomenon that is adaptive to changing cultural and social contexts.

Abstrak

Penelitian ini menganalisis keterkaitan antara penyembahan anak lembu emas dalam Keluaran 32 dan manifestasi pemberhalaan pada masyarakat modern. Berhala dengan penelitian sebelumnya yang umumnya berfokus pada larangan penyembahan bergala atau evaluasi pada tokoh-tokoh biblis, studi ini menawarkan analisis komparatif mengenai tranformasi bentuk dan mekanisme pemberhalaan dari konteks Israel kuno ke era kontemporer. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi literatur terhadap teks Alkitab, sumber-sumber teologi Perjanjian Lama, dan kajian mengenai pemberhalaan modern. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa anak lembu emas tidak semata-mata merepresentsikan penyembahan terhadap objek fisik, melainkan mencerminkan upaya manusia mengendalikan dan memvisualisasikan kehadiran ilahi sesuai kebutuhan eksistensialnya. Pola yang sama ditemukan dalam pemberhalaan modern melalui materalisme teknologi, kekuasaan, status sosial, dan narsisme yang berfungsi sebagai objek pengandalan utama manusia. Temuan ini menunjukkan adanya pergeseran bentuk berhal dari artefak religius yang bersifat fisik menuju konstruksi sosial dan psikologis yang bersifat fungsional, sementera mekanisme dasarnya tetap sama, yaitu pengalihan kebergantungan dari Allah kepada ciptaan. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada pengembangan teologi biblika dengan memperluas pemahaman tentang konsep berhala sebagai denomena religius yang adaptif terhadap perubahan konteks budaya dan sosial.
